Her Eyes On Randy

“Her Eyes On Randy,” 2013
Polychrome pencil, 26″ x 42″Her Eyes on Randy is a hand drawn replication of a professional wrestling trading card collected by the artist in 1986. The card shows an image of a concerned Miss Elizabeth Hulette looking anxiously into the ring as her real life husband “Macho Man” Randy Savage wrestled an opponent. In the 1980s, professional wrestlers were often depicted as cartoon-like characters. Miss Elizabeth, however, represented one half of the very real Freudian-coined Madonna-Whore Complex– a feminine, pretty, timid, wholesome woman who doted on her (abusive) husband. In 2003, at age 42, Miss Elizabeth accidentally overdosed on a cocktail of recreational and prescription drugs. My drawing conceptually references commercial printing offset processes, questioning the importance of multiples in art and commerce, and the obscured distinction between reality and fantasy in popular culture.
