San Juan Ferry

Date

Last weekend, I spent several days on Orcas Island, one of the larger islands in the San Juans. The San Juans are located at the top of the Puget Sound near Canada. They are extremely beautiful and a popular tourist destination in the summer. It was the first time I had taken a ferry, and the experience was very exciting and quintessentially Pacific Northwestern. I boarded in Anacortes, about an hour and half north of Seattle. The ferry ride lasted about an hour, first stopping at Shaw Island.  I stayed at Doe Bay Resort, an old hippie complex on the far east shore of Orcas Island that relies solely on word of mouth for advertisement. After de-boarding the ferry at its stop on Orcas, I had to drive 40 minutes across the Island to Doe Bay. It’s a pretty big island.

The weather was cold, windy and rainy as we slowly made our way across the Sound. I braved the rain to taste the sea spray, and enjoyed having the observation deck to myself.
