On the way back from Salvation Mountain, we stopped at Bombay Beach on the Salton Sea. If you haven’t seen the fabulous documentary Plagues and Pleasures on The Salton Sea, you really should. John Waters narrates this exploration into a planned vacation resort gone bad. The Salton Sea is now regarded as one of the worst ecological disasters in the country. It’s remained a haven for eccentrics and counter-culture fringes. Walking around Bombay Beach feels like traipsing across a post-apocalyptic landscape from a forcefully forgotten nightmare.
